There are 8 categories based on vehicle weight (A to H) — passenger cars fall under category A. Validity starts immediately from the chosen date, with no waiting period, for 1, 10, 30, 60 days or 12 months (365 rolling days from the purchase date, not a calendar year). Driving without a valid vignette can result in a fine of 500 to 1,000 RON (about €100–200), enforced by automatic cameras; paying the fine doesn't replace the obligation to buy a valid vignette.
